Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART
Piano Sonatas K 310, 333, 394 e 570
Gianluca Cascioli, piano
DGG 4810866
Gianluca Cascioli is a musician that one can easily find in a concert room and seldom in a recording studio.
There are few recordings available and it's really a pity because Cascioli mixes authentic technical skills with a love for music and a search for phrasing that is really uncommon.
I knew already his Chopin recital on Decca, a mix of tightrope walker show and meditations that unites elegance and juvenile enthusiasm.
I bought this record in a heartbeat but once I started to play it I could not stop.
Cascioli's Mozart is really different from what we are used to listen to, it's not ephebic and the sound is not at all constrained ...
It has a light touch but musical phrasing is often enlarged and keys are somehow rubato, anyway the final outcome is not stunning as one may think but it communicates calm, tranquility, a deep pleasure in listening and highlights the complex structure of the compositions recorded here.
There's no point in making a comparison because such a chiseled Mozart is hard to find and listen anywhere else.
The sound of the piano, as it is recorded is really beautiful. Sometimes the left hand seems to be dominating but also the right part of the keyboard has a consistency and a timbre,
If the volume in the listening room is similar to that of a real piano, and the recording with its sound stage is very helpful, you may be surprised and find yourself looking for that piano you hear so close and real.
It's absolutely recommended.
